The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) was founded in 1948 and currently is the
world’s largest HR professional society, representing 285,000 members in more than 165 countries. For nearly seven decades, the Society has been the leading provider of resources serving
the needs of HR professionals and advancing the practice of human resource management.
The SHRM mission is to be a globally recognized HR professional society that exists to develop
and serve the HR professional, and advance and lead the HR profession. SHRM provides education, thought leadership, certification, community and advocacy to enhance the practice of human
resource management and the effectiveness of HR professionals in the organizations and communities they serve.
In the United States, Congress and government agencies have turned to SHRM nearly 140 times
in 2017 for knowledge and perspectives on issues such as workplace flexibility, healthcare, immigration and much more. In November 2017, a piece of legislation SHRM helped develop was in
troduced in the U.S. Congress. The “Workflex in the 21st Century Act” is about rethinking how,
when and where people do their best work.
